2025Majlis is a Short collaborative Film with the artist Mana Tashakorinia. From the synopsis: Husayn ibn Ali is the third Imam in Shi’ite Islam. His rebellion against tyranny in Kufa (the Ashura uprising) and the tragic massacre of him and his family have long been mourned in the Shi’ite community. This mourning ritual has inspired many forms of protest against tyranny and has been carried into the month of Muharram in Iran—from the Green Movement in 2009–2010 to the Zhina uprising in 2022. Majlis is a fluid movement between my childhood archives of Ashura grieving rituals and the resonances of various uprisings with this rebellious mourning practice in Iran, spanning 2004 to 2024. Majlis was selected by Josefin Arnell for The One Minutes Series “Uncomfortable Encounters” and has become part of The One Minutes Collection, which comprises over 17,000 video works from artists in more than 120 countries and is preserved by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. Till now, this work has been screened at De uitkijk Amsterdam, Remise, Amsterdam (NL) and NDSM Fuse, Amsterdam (NL).
